All the time someone ask for a cheap and good solution to test with ESX hosts. Problem is clear. The hardware is very expensive.
With the VMware Workstation 6.5 (WS 6.5.1 Build-126130) it is possible to run ESX in a VM on the pc at home or on the notebook. You need the VMware Workstation 6.5 and a CPU with AMD-V or Intel-VT support.
Here is a small How-To:
1. Create a Custom Virtual Machine
2. You need the Workstation 6.5 compability
3. Choose a Linux Version for he VM. Choose a “other” Linux.
4. Configure one or more CPU´s
5. You need a minimum of 1024 MB RAM.
6. Configure networking
7. Choose a LSI Logic adapter
8. Create a new 6 GB SCSI disk
9. Customize the hardware of the VM. Remove: floppy, soundcard and usb. At the CPU tab you must configure the execution mode to: Intel VT-x or AMD-V
10. Edit .vmx manual and add the following lines to the file:
monitor_control.restrict_backdoor = TRUE
monitor_control.vt32 = TRUE
monitor.virtual_exec = "hardware"
ethernet0.virtualDev = "e1000"
11. Install your ESX
Have fun with your ESX VM.

Comments
man sollte noch die Hardwarevorauss etzung für das ganzen nennen:
- ein Intel CPU der Intel VT+ unterstützt (bei ESX4)
- mind. 2GB RAM für. ESX4
und viel Geduld xD
